Brainerd's commentary on apostolic succession, 1800s.

Collection comprises a volume (approx. 248 pgs, including several pgs. laid-in) containing an nineteenth-century commentary primarily on apostolic succession, with discussions of the divine right of clergy and lay ministry. The apologist may have been the owner of the volume, who is identified as "Mr. Brainerd, Lyme, Ct." This may possibly indicate David Smith Brainerd (1812-1875), before his installation as pastor of the Old Lyme (Conn.) Congregational Church, in 1841. In addition to extensive biblical passages, the author references commentaries by Edward Stillingfleet, Daniel Whitby, William Cave, Philip Doddridge, and John Cosin, and provides a history of Christianity from the apostolic age forward.
